Why is one man sad and another man happy? Why is one man joyous, successful, and full of love for life and another man poor and miserable? Why is one man fearful and anxious and another full of faith and confidence? Why does one man have a beautiful, luxurious home while another man lives out a meager existence in a slum? Why is one man a great success and another an abject failure? Why is one speaker outstanding and immensely popular and another mediocre and unpopular? Why is one man a genius in his work or profession while the other man struggles and works all his life without doing or accomplishing anything worthwhile? Why is one man healed of a so-called incurable disease and another isn’t? Why is it so many good, kind religious people suffer the tortures of the damned in their mind and body? Why is it many immoral and irreligious people succeed and prosper and enjoy radiant health? Why is one woman happily married and her sister very unhappy and frustrated? Why are many wealthy individuals still unhappy and not content with their wealth? Why do so many relationships continue to fail or are filled with unhappiness? Why is one man feel guilty and depressed over his actions while another feels at peace and even joyful for making the same actions? Why is happiness fleeting for so many? Why do we continue to have wars and conflict? Is there an answer to these questions within the interaction of our conscious and subconscious minds? There most certainly is! – Dr. Joseph Murphy
As an intelligent, observant person one cannot help but think about and ask these questions of life and many more related to humanity and our individual lives. And the great news is that the answers are known and have been for quite sometime. But why is it that more people don’t know the answers or don’t even ask? It’s because we’re not taught properly about the power that we each have within us, especially within our own mind. Our mind is so incredibly intricate and powerful that we can’t even begin to imagine the potential that we have within us. There are many reasons why we haven’t learned to use more of our minds and use it properly but that’s more of a conspiracy discussion rather than educational. I’d like to share some ideas and try and shed some light on the topic of understanding the power of our mind so that we all can begin to change our lives for the better.
The Aspects of the Mind
First of all we have to understand the concepts involved when discussing the power of the mind. There are two main areas of the mind that we are immediately interested in. Majority of psychologists have come to accept the concept of the conscious mind and the subconscious/unconscious mind. The latter side of the mind has gone by many names by prominent psychologists but regardless of its name they all agree it is the most powerful of the two and extremely important in creating our lives. With that being said lets discuss the differences between the two.
The conscious mind is the concept of the mind that we are most familiar with. It is the part of the mind that is responsible for and deals with our waking thoughts throughout the day as well as our actions. It is responsible for our habitual thinking and is responsible for the belief systems that get embedded into the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is therefore the gate keeper to the subconscious mind since it is the reasoning and judgment faculty of the brain. It is also where ego thinking and perceptions comes in to try and take control of our consciousness and create a life consisting of negativity and limitation. Monitoring and controlling the conscious mind and gatekeeper to our subconscious is incredibly important when we learn just what exactly our subconscious is capable of.
Another way to think of our mind is that there are two levels, the rational/reasoning/judging conscious mind and the creative/dreaming/sleeping/irrational subconscious mind. The subconscious is responsible for our emotions based on the thoughts given to it from the conscious mind as well as controlling of all the body’s involuntary functions. The core concept of the subconscious mind is that as we think so it shall be, as above, so below. Thus, if we think good, good will follow and if we think negatively, negativity will follow – this is how our mind works and creates our life experience.
The interaction between the two parts is as follows: the subconscious will accept any idea we give to it and once accepted and believed as true the subconscious sets out to execute it by law. Hence, when we think in a negative way we cause failure, frustration, and unhappiness. However, if we are habitually thinking harmonious and constructive thoughts we experience health, success, and prosperity. Whatever we think and feel as true our subconscious will accept and bring forth into our reality. This is the truth behind the saying as above, so below.
The Mind as a Garden
Some analogies to help understand the concept of these two parts of our mind is that our mind is like a garden and the conscious mind is planting seeds (thoughts) into the soil (the subconscious mind) all day long based on patterns of thought. And as you plant these seeds of thought and give them what they need (repeated attention and belief) they become our reality by the power of our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind will grow our seeds of thought whether they are good or bad just like the sun doesn’t make any judgment as to what it’s shining upon it just is what it is, unconditionally and eternally. So using this analogy we can see that the subconscious is the part of the mind that will bring into our reality whatever it is that we give our constant conscious attention to in the form of thoughts that over time turn into rooted belief systems. This will hopefully make more sense as we continue. However, what I’d like us to start thinking about as we discuss this concept is that every condition and circumstance in our life is an effect of our thinking and every thought is the cause. It is certainly true that thoughts become things.
Look around you wherever you live and you will notice that the vast majority of mankind lives in the world without; the more enlightened men [human] are intensely interested in the world within. Remember, it is the world within, namely, your thoughts, feelings, and imagery that makes your world without. It is, therefore, the only creative power and everything which you find in your world of expression, has been created by you in the inner world of your mind consciously or unconsciously. – Dr. Joseph Murphy
Incredible Power of the Subconscious Mind
Another thing to remember about the mind is while we’re making decisions with our conscious mind throughout the day, without any conscious attention our subconscious is keeping us alive by keeping our heart beating, our digestion working, circulation going, lungs breathing, and not to mention countless cellar processes. These, and thousands of other involuntary, or unconscious actions, of the body are being monitored and taken care of by our subconscious mind at all times. Keeping this in mind we can see how our subconscious is always working for us 24 hours a day 7 days a week and never stops, never sleeps.
Psychologists have proven the power of the subconscious and it’s lack of reasoning countless times through thousands of experiments throughout the past century. One of the easiest ways for psychologists to access the subconscious is through hypnosis where the conscious mind is turned off or at least extremely lessened in it’s use. When in a hypnotic state the participant’s subconscious will carry out exactly what command is given to them whether it’s true or not and since the conscious mind is subdued it doesn’t interfere with the commands being given. Some examples of the power of subconscious through suggestion are when participants will act out certain characteristics suggested to them such as, their back will start itching by suggestion, their nose will start bleeding, allergies will present themselves, there bodies will physiologically respond as if it’s freezing or extremely hot, they’ll develop symptoms of a cold or some other suggested illness, physiological changes will occur in the body by suggestion such as increased perspiration, heart rate changes, breathing changes, etc., the list is endless. These experiments and many more, leave no room for doubt about the power of the subconscious mind and it’s infinite powerful effect on us and our lives.
Moving into Acceptance
When we begin to understand that our mind is responsible for our reality we can begin to work to correct our conditioning by going within ourselves instead of blaming outside sources. This is what I was referring to in a previous post about being what it is you want, and that happiness, for example, is not created from certain conditions but that certain conditions are created from happiness. This is because the mind can only create what you’re giving attention too. From a quantum physics standpoint we now can understand this scientifically because we know that every thought has a certain frequency of vibration and as we emit our frequencies of thought and actions to the universe the universe responds by sending conditions of the matching frequency. So as we hold thoughts of happiness, peace, harmony, wealth, and joy the universe responds by attracting to us situations that match our frequency, by law.
The Law of Attraction
Just like the law of gravity, the law of attraction and the power of the subconscious work whether you believe in them or not, or whether you’re paying attention to it or not. Just like our heart keeps beating though we’re not consciously paying attention to it. It is my experience that we can trace every circumstance in our life to a pattern of thinking or a belief system embedded within our mind. If you don’t believe me, try thinking about some accomplishments in your life and think to where it all started. Or perhaps think about the fact that everything we see in life started as a thought. The computer or electronic device you’re reading this on was thought up by someone and then transferred into action through design and production and now it’s sitting in front of you – thought into thing. All things in life start with a thought and I’m not just referring to material things, this is the same for our health, success, and happiness, hence “as a man thinketh, so he is.”
There is no exception to this. This is universal law and anyone who doesn’t agree must be confused or in denial of their own power. This of course makes sense seeing how ego thinking would like to keep us trapped in the belief of dis-empowerment and victimization. The truth is we are amazing creators of our realities and of our lives. The sooner we realize and accept this in the deepest sense of which it is intended, the sooner we can stop living lives full of blame and victimization.
The Relationship of the Conscious and Subconscious Mind
To further understand the interaction between the conscious and subconscious mind we can think of ourselves as a ship moving forward with our various goals and aspirations. The conscious mind is our reasoning mind, it is our captain of the ship shall we say, and it is giving the orders to the rest of the crew on what to do in order to get us where we want to go. The subconscious is all the people below deck that are making sure the ship is running properly and getting it to our destination. However, the crew don’t question the orders or even see where they’re going necessarily because it’s not their job to know, they just simply take the orders as they’re given. The captain says faster – the crew makes sure the engines and ship has everything that is required to go faster, they don’t ask why they just do. This is the same interaction of our conscious and subconscious mind. For example, the conscious mind gives the thought of health and holds that thought often enough that it becomes an embedded belief system that we are always healthy. Now the subconscious mind accepts this belief system no matter what because it has no judgment faculty, it has no sense of reason or argument it just does what it is told by repeated conscious commands.
Now the subconscious mind takes it’s orders of health and thus our bodies are healthy and satisfied always. However, when we start thinking thoughts of illness and giving our attention to sickness and fatigue through thoughts of worry or conditioned fear of getting sick, we then have moments of sickness from time to time or major illnesses that cripple our lives or even kill us. This is why it is so important to be aware of our programming and our words. I’ve discussed this before and I hope that people are starting to understand the concept of the power of our mental programming. We have to be careful what we think, say, and do because it all has an impact on our lives whether we think so or not, and I don’t mean just in the immediate future but in forming life long belief systems and patterns of thought within our subconscious.
The Innocent and Naive Subconscious
So if a child is told that “life is hard”, that “good things are hard to come by”, that “there’s more to life than happiness”, “money doesn’t grow on trees”, “we can’t afford that”, and all kinds of other limiting beliefs that we tell our children, than they take that as absolute truth and unless identified, canceled, and replaced, will go on to live out their lives believing these things as true as thus attract a life that affirms them as fact! They’ll just continue to perpetuate their own dissatisfaction with life and never really know why the other man/woman is better off then them. But these belief systems are most of the time not true! They are illusions, they’re just thoughts that someone else imprinted on us as children or that we heard and accepted as truth from someone else whether it’s a parent, friend, or authority figure it doesn’t necessarily matter.
An example of this would be when a doctor tells you that you only have so long to live and if you believe it with enough faith and conscious attention and thought it will be so. But on the other hand someone is told by their doctor that have about 6 months and they don’t allow their subconscious to accept it they end up living for 10 more years. In the latter case the person had faith that they will prevail, they had a strong thought pattern or belief system that they will survive and overcome. Another example is a story of a man who went to see a psychic who told him by the next moon he would be dead. Now this man had so much absolute faith in this psychic that he took it as 100% truth. So he began making arrangements for his death such as giving away his things, writing a will, and saying goodbye to friends and family. In other words, for the next few weeks his every waking thought was based on the thought that he was going to die by the next moon without question. By carrying this thought around so intensely and repeatedly, low and behold by the next moon he had passed away. There are many extreme documented examples of these types of things happening around the world that have to make the intelligent person ask… what is really going on here?
Placebo and ‘No-cebo’ Effect
Another one of my favorite examples of the power of our subconscious minds is in the study of placebos and nocebos. For those unfamiliar, the placebo is when during a pharmaceutical drug trial for example, the patient is given a sugar pill that should seemingly have no effect on the patient but they’re told it is real medication and it will have a desired effect (i.e. curative). And for the nocebo it is the reverse, when they give the patient the pill the patient responds with worse symptoms and the sugar pill is capable of eliciting negative side effects – all of course is the in mind of the patient and not objectively stimulated. What they’ve found repeatedly is that always there will be a percentage of both categories that will respond as directed by the doctor! So for those given a placebo but were told it will have a specific effect on the body it ends up having that specific curative effect! And for the nocebo that should technically do nothing actually effects the body’s physiological responses negatively! Now this is fascinating to me as a previous medical student and is absolute proof of the power of the subconscious mind.
What I’ve heard people argue is that why isn’t it 100% then, but that’s an easy answer, because the belief system isn’t strong enough. For those that it has the effect on it’s because their minds fully accepted it. In religious terms Jesus mentioned this after every healing he performed. He would always say something along the lines of your faith hath made thee whole or according to your faith it is done unto you. To me this all makes perfect sense. It’s the same concept as the placebo and nocebo, it’s the faith that’s important and with full expectancy that an effect will happen. This would also explain why there are so many recorded spontaneous healing miracles all over the world at various holy sites or by other avatars and masters of our time.
Power of Belief
With a background in psychology this is extremely clear to me. What we think is possible and accept as truth will become our reality. It is by the infinite power of our subconscious minds that all healing takes place as well as all other aspects of our reality, not just our health. The only limits that we have is the ones we place on ourselves or let others place on us. Our natural state is abundance in all the glorious things of life. It is only from poor education that we lose that and start living a life of struggle and accepting the belief that “that’s just the way it is.” But if we look back through history there have always been those who thrived even though everyone else wasn’t. There has always been successful people in times of economic decay. That is because people throughout time have been tapping into this deep truth of the power of their subconscious mind whether knowingly or not.
This is why I’ve been advocating for us to go within and monitor our thoughts and check to see if our belief systems are limiting us somehow through repetitive thinking. Are we predominately holding thoughts of self-doubt or incapability? Are we constantly saying to ourselves that “something is wrong with me,” “I always get sick,” “I’m no good,” “happiness is hard to come by in this life,” “you have to work hard for money,” and so forth?
By paying attention to our thoughts we can begin to change our lives in untold ways. By becoming conscious and being aware of what vibration we’re holding we can begin to see how our thoughts are effecting and creating our lives. There is absolutely perfect correlation between our thoughts and our circumstances no question about it. It is pure cause and effect by universal law. Our thoughts are the cause and our conditions and circumstances are the effect. This is no longer a hypothesis or even theory anymore – it’s fact. Scientists have proven it to us time and time again just like they have shown that we are all one as a fact and radical truth.
Our subconscious mind is an amazing and powerful tool that we have at our disposal if we know how to use it as such. If we were to teach our children how to choose happiness and create lives full of endless joy by using the power of their subconscious mind we’d see a completely different world. That’s because proper education begets proper, abundant, joyful living. By reclaiming our power of our subconscious and consciously planting our seeds of thought, or giving our orders to the crew, we can change our life any way we desire. This of course will take a transcendence of the ego thinking which is why it is so important to discuss and understand first. Because we have to remember the truth that we will never be happy as long as ego thinking is running our lives. This is the other part of becoming more conscious, acting out of unconditional love.
When we think and act with unconditional love we are thinking and acting from a place of balance and enlightenment because ego thinking can not exist in a mind filled with love. Love is fear’s polar opposite and the two can not exist together, just like light can not be in the same place as darkness and vice-versa. As discussed before, Love is our Higher Self and fear is our limited ego thinking. When we become a being filled with unconditional love for ourselves and for all-that-there-is we have truly transcended the ego and have overcome the world or are, in the world but not of it, as Christ put it. As we transcend ego thinking our subconscious will naturally begin to be filled with loving positive thoughts of creativity and joy by default since there won’t be opposition. And as we exercise conscious control of our thoughts we change our lives! The power of our mind is unparalleled and it is imperative that we try to understand it better in order to create lives filled with true happiness, joy, and fulfillment and help to create a world of peace and abundance for all. It is through understanding these concepts that we can begin to evolve and progress as individuals and as a species.
For now reread, ponder, meditate, and experiment with these ideas if you choose, find your own Truth that is waiting for you to remember. I wish you the best and hope for your success and happiness. May you walk on a blissful path.
